During a visit to the museum in 2012, Vanessa Gade was fascinated by the architectural plans of the new Snøhetta expansion. In 2013 debuted her first SFMOMA-inspired collection, with pieces honoring the architectural features of the both the new and original buildings, including the Mario Botta rotunda. Many of the pieces were named for some of the designer’s favorite artists in the SFMOMA collections: Kahlo, Rivera, Brancusi, Rothko and Matisse.
Vanessa Gade’s Apex series was inspired by the shapes and angles found in SFMOMA’s new Snøhetta building. The designer was fascinated by the architectural renderings of the new building and loved the edgy forms formed by the terraces when viewed from an aerial perspective. She used this sleek shape as the foundation of this collection, manipulating it in layers and curves to create a collection of earrings, necklaces and rings.
